95th Reading Scout Group

Sparta Explorer Scout Unit

At 95th Reading we host the Sparta Explorer Scout Unit. An Explorer Scout Unit is made up of young people aged between fourteen and eighteen years old. Their uniform consists of a beige shirt, green polo shirt (optional), navy blue Scout trousers and a blue and orange Group scarf. We normally wear uniform for the weekly meetings but do, on occasion, have ‘non-uniform’ evenings depending on the activity being undertaken.

Sparta Explorer Scouts meet once a week on a Wednesday between 19.30 and 21.30 as an Explorer Scout Unit, however, unlike the younger Sections there is no formal grouping within the unit.

By taking part in the weekly programmes, camps, expeditions and other activities, Explorer Scouts work towards Chief Scouts Platinum Award, Chief Scouts Diamond and ultimately their Queens Scout Awards. These are aimed at developing the individual Explorer Scouts' skills and knowledge. They can also gain Activity Badges which augment the Awards. The activities are led by our Explorer Scout Team consisting of the Explorer Scout Leader (Ron Spencer) assisted by two Assistant Explorer Scout Leaders (Graham Osborn & Pip Jones).

Most of our members have come through the Group from Beaver Scouts into Cub Scouts and the Scout Troop - once a young person has joined the Unit they will have a ‘trial’ period of three – four weeks depending on the individual young person after which time, if they like being a Scout, they will be invested into the Troop with a short ceremony when they make their Promise and are given a set of badges and a certificate of Investiture. Parents are invited to their son/daughter’s Investiture Ceremony for which the Explorer Scouts will need their uniform. At this point we will also ask you to pay the subscription fee which is currently set at £35 per term.

Many of our members are also taking part in the Young Leader scheme, working with the younger Sections to assist the Adult Leader Teams to deliver quality programmes for all of our young people. We are currently looking at registering as a deliverer of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme which will provide another aspect to the Scouting that we offer to our young people.

Ideally the Uniform should be purchased from the Reading Scout and Guide Shop as the town centre retailers are not able to supply the scarf. If you are able to get to the Reading Scout and Guide Shop and can let us have any receipts, we can claim back 10% for the Scout Group. Please follow the link to the Scouts.org webpage showing you where to position the badges.
